A little Enka! - 2009-09-04 19:30

Here’s a little Enka for you. This genre of music is very popular amongst older people and in rural areas. Needless to say, here in Asagiri which is both rural and bursting at the seams with old people, Enka is very, very popular.

Here is the Queen of Enka, sadly passed on. Her name is Misora Hibari.

Here is the Prince of Enka, Kiyoshi Hikawa.

And here is Jero, my personal hero.

Enka has been compared to American Country music. Not because the music is similar, but because people consider uniquely Japanese like Country is uniquely American. Also, thematically Enka is typically sad or nostalgic. While I can’t quite get into the music, these are some of the best singers I’ve ever heard.

Jero is awesome! His appearance is so… gangsta and then he opens his mouth and this beautiful sound cascades forth!
