About Me

Why am I in Japan?

There’s no reason for me to wax philosophical. So, instead of metaphysically answering “why”, I will respond to “what am I doing in Japan?” I run an English night school (juku) called the Evergreen English Academy for kids and adults. I came to Asagiri on the JET Program and fell in love with the place. I have been here for five years and live with my wife Manami and son, Rentaro.

Welcome to The Joshman Koo Koo Ka Choo the Gaijin Rambler! I am an American barbarian living in Japan. If you imagine that I am surrounded by bright neon talking garbage cans, immaculately dressed but slovenly drunken salary men, Tokyo girls dressed in hot pink S&M attire, vending machines that dispense disposable neckties, or think that I love anime, Hello Kitty!, samurai movies or bizarre poruno, you’d be wrong. That’s right, you heard me. Dead-Freakin’-Wrong. I live in Kumamoto Prefecture in a small rural town called Asagiri. It’s not in the middle of no-where, I assure you; it’s on the fringes of somewhere. I love my life here in rural Japan more than I love my right index finger. (Imagine not having a right index finger! That’s a lot o’ love.) This site is dedicated to my life in the ever-confounding but significantly charming Japanese countryside with my wife, Manami: the most beautiful woman on God’s green earth and my son Rentaro: cuteness incarnate.

Be sure to check out the “Daily” section for a daily dose of the Joshman! That’s right, I’ll be updating everyday now with pithy observations! Isn’t that swell? But never fear, I will still be writing longer articles for my amusement when time and whim allow.
